Rock [3D]

Well, I've been practicing 3D for a long time now, trying to get the hang of it. I started working with Maya, which has worked well with me (I need the full version, cause the learning edition has its...limitations), and I've finally gotten then hang of it and here is my first real attempt at anything 3D. It's simple enough, but I went all out on the texture, I put as much detail as I could think of.

And heres just the texture in case you were curious. ^^

Unfortunately I made the texture too small, so it got kinda stretched. And the downside of having the Maya Learners Edition is it puts that little logo over the view after you render it.

seeing as i cant do 3d at all, anything looks amazing to me, 9 outta 10 for that rock

Crow 01-20-2007 10:58 PM

You either need a bigger texture, or one with a higher quality. But I kinda like the rock itself.

Yeah I'm working on a bigger, better one right now. The first one was only 256x256 =/

I used to play with some 3D objects, and 1024*1024 is a pretty good size for small ones. 512*512 is better if you want to make a whole game though. 1024*1024 would need to many resources for so many small objects :]

I made a 512x512 now, because this program doesn't let me go to 1024x1024. >=( This is practice (although it might be used) for a game (that I cannot mention because mods will get mad ;[) that me and my friend are making. It has so many restraints, once we really start we'll buy something (via the company we are working for that I also cannot name) professional.

Anyways, heres my improved version (hardly).

Looks better to me. But you actually can make good looking textures. I got a newish computer and I was yet too lazy to download my favourite Photoshop plugin to make decent textures :D

Draenin 01-21-2007 12:50 AM

Noise the texture by about 5-10% to give it a granulated look.

Eh, I tried but then when I blurred it so that it doesn't look like theres a million dots or random color it just turned to crap and lost a lot of detail.

Infernix 01-21-2007 01:12 AM

Looks like a rotten potato the 2nd time.

Don't blur it. Take the texture and noise it to 5-10% or even 15-20% if needed. When you do so, make sure you have the noise set to monochrome so you won't get 'random colors.' Usually uniform or gaussian noising works the best. Random noising usually sucks and should be avoided if at all possible.

Paint Shop Pro 7 can't do that. ;-;

I will roffle all of my waffles if this is true.

There is a noise filter in PSP7, of course. But it only does random colors.

I added around 8% of noise...try it out.

notoalpena 01-21-2007 01:57 AM

Neat, I wish I could make 3d stuff! D:

Crow 01-21-2007 02:01 AM

10 % and 1024*1024, if you want to try that one :P

I recently said you 2nd form on the rock was beginning to look like a potato and a mod removed it. Why I don't know. It was not a flame but it was me telling you it was not looking like it was suppose to be.

Why did I think begin to think it was looking like a rotten potato? Its because of the green you added to it.

It looks amazing. Now I need to figure out how to do that in PSP7, cause I'm sure there is a way, it's just not obvious.

Guys - use attachments. I will simply delete the posts, and if the thread begins with a post that contains linked images, I'll delete the thread.

Anyways. I didn't think Draenin would be right, I thought the noise would look pretty bad - but I was absolutely wrong. It was exactly what it needed, and looks really nice now.

Of course, I will add my 2.7mb modified texture to the forum attachments which has a limit of 1mb.

Don't be foolish - we don't need the full size texture. Just provide a smaller version for us :)

Mostly for archival purposes - so that in a year or two the thread won't be full of dead links.

Textures need full quality, I cant just resize them.

I mean for display purposes, the rest can be done in PMs. Don't be difficult :P

Well he intended for me to use it, but unfortunately I can't. Sorry =(

I'm trying some other kinds of textures in different colors, heres what I have so far:

Yea, actually I wouldn't mind getting into it myself. Perhaps someone would put together a series of tutorials? Contact me if anyone intends to.

Well, considering that it REALLY depends on the program you're using...that would be kind of difficult. I've worked with 5 or 6 different 3D programs, and they all work very differently.

No duh :P

I mean for a specific program. :D

Twinny 01-21-2007 07:43 AM

I was going to start using Zbrush but I havn't gotten around to it (sorry Kevin). I also have 3d studio max. What's the easiest one to begin with?

I have a bit of experience in 3Ds Max, nothing else though. I enjoyed 3Ds Max, a bit ruggid but definitely did the job.

Chicken_l33t 01-21-2007 09:52 AM

Good rock, a little smooth looking, but still good. I've been trying out some 3D programs lately like Open FX, Milkshape 3D and another which was just plain out stupid.

I really enjoy working with Milkshape because it's so easy to use even though you have to pay for it :/

WTF. You have to pay for Milkshape now?! It used to be free. ;-;

Thats the thing about making a tutorial for 3D, a lot of people use different programs, and even still almost all 3D programs cost a LOT of money. Even the ONE good free 3D program costs money now =(

For Christ's sake, man. Check the website - it's still free.

Rocks hot. I'm hotter. Let's state that. Leave it at that. And don't even look at it.

And oh, it's still free. Yay. I'm still gonna use Maya anyways. =) It works better for me.
