GNU/Linux Client

Sorry if this is the wrong spot to post this, feel free to move it.

When launching Graal I get a message telling me to update, and then the game closes. Unfortunately there is no update for the GNU/Linux Graal client available. This has rendered me unable to play the game. Please get this sorted out ASAP. I haven't been on lately and I don't want to lose my house on Era from inactivity.

Shadestone 02-02-2015 07:52 PM

What?! There's no GNU/Linux support right now? How the hell am I going to get on.

This is a serious oversight, I hope that it is fixed immediately.

cyan3 02-02-2015 08:42 PM

I've noticed this as well. The Linux client was last updated in November 2012 when 6.037 was released and it seems that 6.113 is now required to connect to the login server.

Darlene159 02-02-2015 10:32 PM

I asked Unixmad, and he said they will try to release a linux client.

Kind of but no quite. You'll only ever get that message if the client is launched via the command line while no message shows on the client itself.

If someone could PM me on the forums when this finally gets sorted out, that would be great. I don't want to forget to keep checking and then never end up playing again.

Just subscribe to the thread. Scroll up towards the top, click threads tools and then subscribe.

Seems I'm already subscribed for making it, but I don't get any sort of notifications for posts made. I've only seen new posts from going back here manually. When I last got a PM I received an email.

cyan3 02-23-2015 09:11 PM

This is still broken btw

bradigger 03-03-2015 09:32 PM

This is actually getting worked on, right? I haven't heard anything in a long time. I really miss this game.

cyan3 03-05-2015 12:18 PM

This problem actually got asked as a question on Ask Ubuntu. see: http://askubuntu.com/q/592982

It seems this might be more wide spread than originally thought.

bradigger 03-08-2015 01:08 AM

It's not a "problem"... The client for GNU/Linux hasn't been updated in multiple years. You currently need the newest client to reach the login servers.

For the record, I don't see the black screen, I get the error message.

It's my birthday tomorrow, and I've always liked logging into Graal to update my age in my profile and then play for a bit. It's gonna be sad to break tradition over the devs being lazy.

knightfire35 03-10-2015 02:54 PM

This problem has also made me unable to play the game, hoping this gets fixed soon.

It was actually my birthday yesterday so I guess I can't change my age either.

It has been over a month now and we still haven't heard anything back at all... not even a "we are working on it" or "sorry we don't support Linux now"

Shadestone 03-10-2015 05:12 PM

When will this be fixed?

Draenin 03-10-2015 09:16 PM

If at all possible, could Linux users please be allowed to access the login server using an older version of the client until a new version can be released? This is locking a lot of people out, and could eliminate the Linux player base altogether.

I think this would be a good temporary solution.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the Mac client was updated or just Windows?

The current Mac version is 6.111 while Windows is 6.113 but I'm fairly sure the OSX client still works as I haven't seen any threads/posts about it being broken.

The answer is yes, use a VM.

Doesn't make up for the lack of an updated native Linux client. We haven't even heard an official statement regarding what's being done about it. (if anything)

Even though it's not as popular as Windows, I know quite a few graal players who use Linux. And it seems ridiculous that all those players have to use a workaround such a VM to play the game.

Cubical 03-13-2015 01:46 PM

you gotta do what you gotta do if you wanna play. put in a complaint and move on. if these forums have taught me anything it's complaining doesnt resolve anything no matter how game breaking it is

The game will run like **** using a VM or even WINE. You really want me to install a virtual version of Windows just to play this game? That's outrageous and I can hardly even take you seriously.

When are we going to hear an actual update on this?

Draenin 04-12-2015 08:26 PM

Like, how hard is it to make the Login server not kick out Linux users if they're using an older version?

That's like a one-line conditional check for what OS they're running.

Seriously.

Why would they cut out such a big chunk of their playerbase when they even supported them for all these years? It's one thing to not port your game to GNU/Linux, but for a game like Graal that was already natively working on GNU/Linux, cutting support for the client just seems stupid.

Inevitably the Linux playerbase isn't all that large especially when compared to Windows and Mac OSX and from a business standpoint it may make sense to cut support for Linux completely. The smaller playerbase would undoubtedly provide less revenue compared to their counterparts and this may even outweigh development costs.

Obviously I'm not condoning such an act as I am an avid Linux user myself but support for our OS has been steadily in decline. The "latest" Linux client was updated 2 years 5 months and 9 days ago and since "Admins" left, support for Linux is much lower.

I remember a time when the Linux client was superior to Windows especially when I came to performance and stability, because of this I was able win the Hour Glass event on Graal Kingdoms constantly as I could finish half of the course before anyone else could even move due to the heavy lag incurred the amount of players in the level.

It is a little bit ironic though, Linux now has more support for video games than It ever has and it seems that one of the games that has always, in a sense pioneered gaming on Linux may drop support for it all together.

Tim_Rocks 04-21-2015 10:52 AM

The real problem is we don't have any real developers actively working on Graal.

I think the worst is the lack of announcement or indication of the drop in support for the linux client... "Please upgrade your version" would imply there is an upgraded version to upgrade to lol

But what can we expect really :asleep:

At the very least we deserve an explanation on what is or isn't happening in regard to support on Linux.

just saw this

I played in a VM when I was globaled and I didn't have any lag give it a try or not. You can run in VM or not play. up 2 u. I'm not the one tasked with supporting this game and complaining obviously doesn't get you anywhere.

The way I see it you have 2 options. VMlyfe or VMlyfe.

Tim_Rocks 04-22-2015 09:04 PM

We could always start a donation box to get better Graal programmers.

Ceasar 04-23-2015 06:45 PM

unixmad is rich enough, he doesn't need donations :noob:

Very well said. I feel this way as well. I remember when I first tried GNU/Linux and my favorite game (Graal) was already available. In hindsight, that's actually kinda mind-blowing. Nothing else I played was really available on the platform at that time, and as you said gaming on GNU/Linux is better now than it ever was. A quarter of the games on Steam have been ported, and now here I am unable to play Graal, a game I played on Ubuntu 7.04 several years ago.

I think I'm gonna put all my eggs in the "let us get on with the old client" basket. If the issue is lack of programmers or funding or whatnot, just get rid of this wall you have created. I understand that the wall is due to some sort of security issue, and forcing everyone to update is for their own, and others', good. If the GNU/Linux community is such a small portion of the Graal community, than this shouldn't be that big of a deal if we're the only ones on with an old client.

The GNU/Linux client had its fair share of issues and clearly WIP things over the years. A lot of things just didn't work how they probably should've. That feeling was always clear, but it didn't stop me from playing the game as well as everyone else. The fact that I'm now cut off completely makes me feel betrayed. I put up with the partially broken client that often had graphical issues and didn't always let you change options properly just to play my favorite game, and now I can't even use that janky client if I want to.

Can we get someone official in here to tell us what's going on? I feel that people are being deceitful in the current situation. This has gone on far too long. If it continues to go on I just know that people will give up, and I'll surely lose my house on Era. Sure, there's an obvious issue and a bit of time has gone by, but if it becomes a year or two, I can't imagine they'll keep my house safe.

bradigger 05-07-2015 07:42 AM

Update on the situation. I had a friend who works for Graal investigate the matter since apparently Darlene is actually powerless in situations like this.

Here's what he had to say on the matter as of today. (we had discussed it a few times over the last couple weeks.)

God, please do. A fix for this has been long overdue.

No one said I was. I asked unix about it, and told you all what he said. That's it.

For some reason I chose to believe she actually contacted unixmad and something would happen from there, but according to Zach she doesn't even have his Skype and it's unlikely contact was really made.

I'll try to post here again if I hear more news on this matter. I don't have any contact with this Novo guy, but it's not the first I've heard of him, so I think this is promising so far.
