Members List

Is there a reason why it is closed off? I always have trouble looking for a member to forum PM.

It was disabled long ago due to 'security issues' from what i remember. Here's a quote from Spark back in 05 when the topic came about the first time.

I already tried it, vBulletin only (however) either makes it so that the member list is enabled for all or none at all. And we don't want it enabled for guests :frown:

I couldn't see an option that allowed it just for certain groups.

:(

Darlene159 11-24-2009 07:08 PM

It's been said many times that the members list will not be enbaled.

Matt 11-24-2009 07:10 PM

I don't see the point of it being enabled anyway, but the memberlist can easily be modified in about 3 minutes so that usergroup id 1, which are guests, cannot view it while it is enabled, but as i said i don't see a point in it being enabled, and doubt it'll ever be enabled again.

If you type the first 3 letters in the address field it drops a list of all possible members

Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, was it ever explained just how guests seeing the members list is a security risk in the first place?

For the same reason that posting percent signs is a security risk.
Hint: No reason.

Yes, Unixmad said because it's basically a list of all Graal accounts nearly.

Not everyone is ok with having their account names public, to people who aren't even a part of our community.

LOL what? Why even register if that's the case?

Crono 11-25-2009 01:00 AM

Because they run their forum/game the way they want to no matter what anyone says and regardless of the state of the said forum/game.

I think there was also something said about spamming members, probably through emails.

I dunno, I post on a forum containining over 157,000 members and the members list is public there. Naturally the member's list should be disabled for non-members.

Yeah, there are loads of bots out there that harvest vBulletin member lists and send emails to them.

That's what I thought

Every single member is easily accessible on Google, why wouldn't bots be able to use the same method? It's not as though our e-mails are public either.

Was thinking the same thing. I'm not even sure how bots work but wouldn't you be able to "lock" them out by making the memberlist only accessible by forum members?

Yea, that's possible, whether or not they decide to do so is another story.
