Maya isn't exactly free... Or for the casual user... It's more like... TWO GRAND and for you know... Big name motion picture companys to use for CGed movies...

Why not use the best? Anyone can learn it if they reall want to. There are plenty of resources to learn. Just use Google.

For game design you can use milkshape. I suggest not trying anything until you can get some serious training though, I almost spazed out trying to use it. + Maya Learning Edition puts a watermark on your model.
