Why wouldn't you work from the center?
From here it makes it easier to show the leaves overlapping, and slowly shrinking in size by the edge. Going from the edge would prove to be more difficult I would think

It's transparent. If the forum layout waas black, it'd have a black backround. This one however will have a green backround (grass) and some shading.

The way I shaded your old tree took about 1 minute (if that's the look you're going for).
