I still wouldn't buy one, however I wouldn't want this thread to mutate into a console battle thread.

I don't recall there being any folder views that weren't in Windows 2000. There were even icon previews. The only thing that I liked about XP was the image preview window which was light and fast, but there's an equivalent program with Microsoft Office 2003 which solved that problem, too.
Hehe, Skyld, don't improperly shut your PC down. ( Unless if you got a recovery disk, or something. :3 )

Anyway, XP > Vista...at least until some decent programs come out for it...other then productivity crap.

Productivity? I find it very hard to be productive when every action I make is assaulted by UAC's Cancel/Allow dialogs.

I still use XP. If the security features have to be disabled for me to do anything, then why bother upgrading?

So you haven't even used Vista properly?

Come back when you have an experienced opinion on it.

You only get UAC dialogs when something requires administrative privileges, meaning when you're changing some settings in the control panel, installing new programs, and some isolated instances where a regular program needs admin privileges. You see the most UAC dialogs when you are first setting everything up after installing the OS. I haven't disabled anything and it doesn't get in my way. It's basically sudo with a GUI.

The main problem with that dialog is probably that in Vista many things that were formerly ok for non-administrators now require administrator rights (e.g. installing programs in the program folder or on C: ), so if you are used to those things it can really get annoying. The "sudo" thing is required less often on Unixes.

There are a few things in Vista which are quite interesting because it makes Windows look less outdated, e.g. you can install gfx drivers without restarting the computer, although the automatic update still requires you to restart the computer, it is trying to wait with that until you shutdown your computer anyway though. The compatbility issues with software and hardware are a problem though, normally people don't expect an OS update to support less software and hardware.

Windows is not a system where you code a program and it will work everywhere, you basicly need to debug it everywhere.
but stefan.. you will need to do something one time.. now the computers are selling with windows vista already installed on it.
i tried to install xp on it but i cant add sound codec graphic card etc..
so i reinstalled vista. i have no choice to wait for you to fix it.
i dont care about gfx. i just want to play without crash when i open a pm or crash for nothing.me too i hate vista but i can't do nothing. soon (in few years) alot of computer will have windows vista. be Prepared.

p.s i know it is not easy.

My college actually sells Vista Home Premium (for students only of course) $89.95 usd, not including tax. I found that to be a really good deal.

The edumacation discounts are always pretty wicked. Only things better are MSDN subscriptions which are super expensive but give you 10 licenses to like, everything microsoft - and getting complimentary copies of software right from the man himself (Booyah).

Got free vista ultimate full edition for helping them test the upgrade feature (only one who managed to bluescreen the installer - rofl), and free office 07 pro for going to their "ready for a new day" vista/office launch event ;D
