Paint servers you very well when pixeling, and many pixel artists still use it. Theres also some guy using iDraw3 (the one Don Miguel translated/created for RM2k, not sure what exactly he did with this) over at the Pixelation forums, and theres this one girl who likes to use MS Paintbrush (the Windows 3.1 version of MS Paint).
