I like to think of it as "Dark Rival is still under construction, but it shows true potentail, this is happening too fast though, if anythiong, I'd expect DR to be hosted first, classic in a few years, maybe less"

This has to be said.

Out of curiosity, I decided to check on the progress of Dark Rival. I walked around the overworld for a few minutes and went back to main town. This is where I found out that this was the old overworld.

Using the handy little warping NPC in the image of Vima, the Co-Owner, I was warped to the new main town and I have to say: Good job guys. The increase of quality startled me off my chair.

I congratulate Excaliber for coming so far into development with his steel determination and his ignorance to those who told him to quit out on the project. Looking at the quality of these new levels, I can see that you have progressed far, and I only hope that the overall gmap is of the same standard.

Again, good job.

When I worked on Dark Rival, I was somewhat begging Excal to organize his server a bit. There were far too many uncategorized weapons, with stolen graphics (ones from UN if I remember right). The folders were so confusing as well. All the levels were in 1 folder. All the events, houses, shops, overworld levels - one folder. Made it extremely difficult to locate a file. With the overworld levels being called random things like "main1_darkrival2.nw" and "mainpath_darkrival2.nw" also made it difficult to find a location without having to log on player.

The overworld was so ugly (I accidently spelt that as 'ungly'... I invented a new definition for UN) and confusing that it should have been scraped.

Although after reading Codein's post I logged on and checked it out, I agree - it is much better.

I don't have RC so I can't really say with the organization of the inventory and folders, but it appears the weapons havnt been sorted out.

Although level wise, good job.

Yeah, the organization isn't so good, I should probably sort the files out. The weapons will eventually be sorted out, to reduce that huge screen, however this will take some time, as I will have to replace EVERY weapon with a new name, and EVERY player will have to get their weapons back somehow x_X

how about this in the NPC Server

NPC Code:
if (hasweapon("Original Name")) {
removeweapon "Original Name";
addweapon "New Weapon Name";
}



And that should do it, if you just keep repeating that for each weapon with Copy and Paste then a little editing.

I'm a crappy scripter. I can do some stuff to get me by, but no of the real good stuff. I wasn't sure how to do that.

Just recently I learned how to read server.strings and client.strings - and I'm not exactly sure wtf #I is :P

If it lags, remove it. This is the best way to replace all your new items with old, and I doubt it will cause any lag.. I have more then one loop in my Control-NPC, and several other stuff and that doesnt cause any lag.

True, but I'd still have to make all the new weapons, AND I would have to set up a string array for each new name and each old one, making sure they match. No matter what, this is going to be a long and difficult process. You forget, DR has over 100 weapons , a lot more i think (i never counted)

You could just delete the old weapons and make the new ones and consider an item reset. Would your playerbase suffer horribly if they had to get weapons anew?

Of course not, this is what I plan to do, I will not make an NPC that converts their weapons, because though it would be easy to make, the NPC server would never be able to handle it. I'm going to have to reset weapons (something I've wanted to do for a while. Catagories will include Misc, Rings, Keys, Ancient Relics, Spells, Physical attacks, tools, and more. it should help sort it out a bit more, but don't expect it to happen overnight, this will take many weeks.

Uhm, if you put the script in the Control-NPC and make it run on login, the lag should be close to nothing.

It would have to loop through hundreds of items, and replace them, all serverside. x_X I've done stuff serverside like that before, it wasn't pretty, especially if you have multiple logings. And lets not forget that all the levels that give you those weapons will have to be changed.

Well, after much arguing, Houdiniman has decided NOT to pass DR, because we do not have a gmap, and the levels aren't 'new player friendly, or attractive' In otherwords, it's too much like the other classic and hosted servers
Honestly, the gmap thing is understandable, but the other reason is just bs.
Anyway, wait a few weeks, DR should have a gmap and prettier levels, I'll resubmit the ticket for Houdiniman to pass it then. We could still use a lot of help, so keep that in mind if you want something to do

The old OW will soon be larger, and have a gmap. Look foward to it some time this week...I hope. It will have an ocean around the main island, which we will expand into before the newest overworld is completed this summer. DR has a lot of room for creativity and developement. We're actually making an overworld.

Okay, what I did was make a gmap with the level editor that was large enough to fit the old OW. Then I replaced the levels in the gmap file with the ones from the old gmap. I press M in editor, and it goes through it fine, however, the map image it generates is messed up, it cannot be opened, and it showes no image. I don't think I did anything wrong. The map is 25x37 levels, could it's size be a problem?
Also, the gmap will not function online

Gmap still doesn't work, and I STILL havn't gotten a reply to my support ticket!
Anyway, DR recently introduced an in game Computer for staff to test. Basically, i allows the players to send e-mails to each other, chat off the IRC, in game, go on the internet, and soon, play games. After a few days testing we will release it to the public (it will be released without games, however, you will receive a freebie or two automatically, and most you will have to buy).
Also, I'm allowing peolpe to submit games, see details, guidlines, and payment(in game rewards) here:

I made the first game, which is free with the computer, a simple guessing game. Keeps score, etc. We want this to have a lot of games, and I can't make them all, so if you can script, please feel free to create and submit a game. Testing seems to be going well, the computer should be released soon.
