I was referring to ThinkDifferents image. Though with yours, a good way of avoiding Gradient type fills is to dither on objects like cylinders, circles, etc. Try it.

On those reference pictures, alot of pixel art can't be shaded using real life reference. It just doesn't work sometimes.
