No, the cauldron just needs to be stuffed with individual items. 10 at least to cause a uncontrolled mana effect... the more weight that is put inside, the lower int, and the lower mental level seems to effect how large the burst is... Also, I've seen much stronger effect from cannonballs being stuffed in them as well...

And its basically like old "build lightning wall" or "build fireball wall"'s... they effect the peaceful mode people, or the battlemode people.. thats why their so fun.

I believe my friend discovered this, it was going to be used as a war tactic. (did it start only recently?) it kills everyone with in a certain distance, and I was first to fall to it, leaving nothing but a shadow

If cauldrons didn't hurt peaceful players, then anyone could do any random alchemy safely, anywhere. Besides, it's the cauldron casting the spells, not the person, though the person controls the spells.
