Okay, but is that really so much of a chore? Assuming that you're willing to place the lights manually in GraalShop, it's a simple step to rip them out of the gani file (directly, through notepad) and plug them into a script.
Or, since most weapons are straight, you could just define a single vector - start is at the base of the blade and the end is at the tip. The system randomly or uniformly generates positions along the vector according to the specific effect wanted.
The benefit would be that it would allow particle effects too - a sword that bursts into flames or drips acid or whatever.
