Just providing context, OS X by default now only allows the user to run software from the App Store or that has been signed by a developer participating in Apple's developer program. This can provide some benefits (Apple can fairly easily slow the spread of malware that has been signed by revoking certificates, code downloads can't be tampered with by a MITM, ...). Seeing that message simply means the developer hasn't signed the application (or that it was probably released before the latest OS X). It's not indicative of malware; there's nothing preventing a developer from signing malware, anyway.
You can change that in System Preferences under Security.
