Element: 2D or 3D?

As of right now, Element (Codename Element) currently has a 3D map. I have been trying to decide whether or not to keep this. It has been a pain in the butt working with 3D maps since I cannot do things like I can with tiles. I want to know the players input on this.

The poll is about a terrain map, or tile map. This is not a poll about Graal3D.
Please input your reasons why you make your choice, and please do vote.

I just made more screenshots to show more of the overworld.

1st: (its dark because the server was going into night time) but you can dig for snowballs and rocks and pelt them at enemies. I am working on snow fort building right now Its going to be very cool.

2nd: When fishing, you can either take the fish as food and sell it, or take it to a special NPC that will allow you to use it as a deadly weapon. Beware of the fish!

While 3D overworlds can look nice they are, as you said, a hassle. I'd go 2D unless you have alot of people who can work well with 3D overworlds.

Yeah. The 3D overworld looks very nice in my opinion, and I even have working house scripts done, but I just can't do everything I want to do.

What kind of things do you want to do?

I say go with 3d, just on the basis that I'd rather see more 3d-terrain playerworlds..

What about isometric? :P

I always thought 3D landscape in the 2D world was annoying in GK, more than beneficial.

The GuildCP was made as a replica of it. I wanted to see if I could script something just like it and I did . I'll probably change the layout as well as add some things that GK doesn't have.

All terrain waters get darker depending on the water height. You can't change that.
GK doesnt have random tiles in its water such as shells and dirt mounds.

I looked at GK's GUI when I designed Elements just because I like minimal GUIs. I know it turned out very similar, but I plan to change it sometime into something more unique. I'm already planning new styles.


People, when your staff are being lazy as hell and you are the only one doing work, its rather hard to create something beautiful and all on your own.
Also, the people who have been applying are just not what I am looking for so that does not help. I am strongest as a scripter, not a graphic artist.

Ya, well, the only thing holding back advancment on that is that NO ONE replied to my isometric artist request, apparently I am the only one who does isometric graphics, and there is too much to be done for myself alone. I am trying to push it out, but there is so much, and 8 directional sprite sheets are time consuming. Grr.

Well when a terrian, since the water has auto different shades at certain heights, it's hard to come up with a different water shade that is different from GK. Of course, you can make a different pattern, which they have.

I love the 3D Terrain we use,but some of our houses are hard to do.Expecially the houses we want to have a walkable rooftop.Attachplayer can be a problem at times, atleast for me anyways.but i voted for 3D because thats what we been doing

ummm i believe awhile back thier was alittle despuit about using certain content beeing used, that belongs to Kingdoms.Stefan said trees and i belive grass tiles and water was allowed to be used for future graal 3D playerworlds (not that we attend to use ANY of Graal Kingdoms Graphics what so eva).

To be honest i prefer smaller GUIs.It seems to lag less with a smaller image draging with your player compared to a image that takes up half your screen, and only the Colors are similar to GK.

Lets try to keep this on topic, and here is the point of this thread:

3D Overworld:
Pros:
+ Unique (not many pws have it)
+ Looks cool


Cons:
+ Requires houses to be npcs (lags)
+ Cant make cool stuff as easily as tiles (bridges, house interaction, etc..)
+ No matter what you do, its going to look similar to GK.


2D Overworld
Pros:
+ Can do many cool things easily
+ Doesnt lag
+ Matches well with the houses (no 2d on 3d)


Cons:
+ Almost every single server has a flat map

As you can see, both sides have their good points and bad points.

Go with the 3D, not every server has it and all.
Plus if you go 2D you have to have some good levels people or else players will see lack of detail and not bother to find the gameplay.
With 3D I don't look for detail like I would for a 2D level, but thats just me.

After playing on your server 3 times. Stick with 3d. Script efficently and there will be little lag.

because I wanted to make an 3d ow to long time ago but I just didnt fidn anyone who can work with it

LATs dont do much on a 3D overworld. You use the terrain generator to make a map and then you set. Its mostly NATs placing trees, houses, paths, etc...You could get an LAT to do it, but in my opinion its too simple of a job for an LAT to do.

if you script it properly it won't lagg, the image dosn't matter.. look why gmaps was inforced

Try ufind a lat thats good in Scripting so he cant script and fix ur lil problem with ur Setting Trees and Bushes..

Open the terrain generator and see. It makes a random map for you.

I can script everything. I already have done most of it.
