Personally, I think the level of the album (gold, platinum, etc.) means nothing. It's the effect the artist has on the industry and his/her fans.
For example, my favorite artist, hide, who died four years ago today (

! ), was extremely influential in the Japanese rock industry. He even made it overseas, but I'm not sure about much of his US stuff. His albums, each of them, still sell over 1 million copies each
per year, showing that despite his death he's still immensely popular. And this year, for the 4 year anniversary, a cover album of sorts is coming out to commemorate him, along with some unreleased songs.
