Spraypaint (or a form of it) is essentially what is used to make most 3-D textures and skins. Let's see what's harder to make, a 2-D, 3/4th view of a cardboard box, or a cheap 3-D box model, and a snapshot of a piece of cardboard as texture. Gee, let me think.
