I think he was. Some kinda chosen-one/magic/diplomaticly strong/warrior/mage thingy that was pretty much a god.

Not really. Gryffon wasnt a chosen one. He was a member of an order of Priests that got wiped out except him. He was no warrior, he couldnt weild a sword for his life. He was unable to use arcane magic, as for diplomacy that's kind of a prerequisit for a Prince.
