I thought that was not allowed in the EU? I don't see why not though, back in the day (like really far back) they had things like the Star Chamber court, Spanish Inquisitions, Maxamiliean Robespierre's reign of Terror etc etc.

That's because over time those kind of punishments were considered to be a violation of human rights. Which is why there are now no death sentences at all in the EU.
