Hey Elk, you're an art director aren't you? I'm interested to know what your thoughts are on this (if you have any that is):

It just seems a little counter-productive since my limited understanding of art is such that it your work should be spontaneous and imaginative, and refusing to draw from imagination defeats the purpose (unless you're drawing from life, like a portrait or something)

I would think the only situation that no imagination should be involved in art is perhaps when you're trying to draw from a real source? In which case that barely helps.
