It has nothing to do with "shutting down", I'm guessing it was a necessary changes for optimizing. I've several times seen Online Level Editors spam savelevel() on every single tile update, and I can imagine that amount of file writing can take a huge toll on the servers.
It's really not an issue at all as long as the level isn't updated before the save effect happens, which takes a minute at most.
