It was my idea to let everyone know what we were doing because you have the right to know why things are taking so long. The original post in this thread even states our intention for announcing this so early:

It was only supposed to take a few weeks to complete. The majority of the work was supposed to be just creating an overworld and dumbing down things like the gang system and events, but our tile artist bailed on us before even finishing the basic tiles. We're not going to create an iphone server that will be in the app store using the current tileset -- it's hideous.

By pushing it off until the dev server is complete (or nearly completed), we will be able to include much more than just the basic systems (such as achievements, more events, quests, etc). Also, if iPhone gamers decide to try the PC version, they won't run into an older and completely different version of what they've been enjoying on their iPhone. Who knows...they might actually stick around.
