Why would a prince be defending from the front line? You don't put your heir in harm's way.
Most stories/books I read have the prince fighting in it, I even remember a movie with the prince fighting on his royal horse, he didn't even get hurt.
Might just be the fantasy mixed with it.

About the shield, I will sure post it soon, but I'm really busy irl actually, so you most likely have to wait 'till the week-end till I get back to it
