Graal "Bible"

So I wondered why Graal Bible and not any of the following title's:

The Graal Vedas ("Scared Hindu book")
The Graal Koran (Muslim book)..
The Graal Tora (Jewish holybook?.. I think)

or better yet why not The Graal Encyclopedia, since I myself am an Athiest I think of the "Bible" notting more as a bunch of jibberish. So would we seriously need a secondiary page for jibberish (we have the forums for this)..

Just my 50 cents, now go on and give your full hearted opinion withouth inciting a flaming war.

Because "bible" just means "book". It really doesn't have a religious connotation unless you're directly relating it back to the Judeo-Christian holy texts. When used outside of that context, the word bible has just taken on the meaning - a book which is all encompossing on a certain subject, I.E. the wiki on graal.

CidNight basically summed it up. I can imagine the "Newbie Scripter's Bible" encountered the same reception.

As shown here your response is somewhat logical but the world bible holds a special meaning towards many people *thinks of something to say.. cause.. umm..*

For example, if graal where to use a Swastika as the logo for graal than that would result in anger for people affliate one thing with another overpowering definition. (In this case Racism) (While it could also mean "life", if facing the right direction)

You are correct, as the Swastika, in it's self, hold other meanings other than the symbol for the Nazi party.

I understand where your coming from but the bible has actually taken on its own connotation beyond that of its religious one. It really has two important meanings in the English language (even though its not originally an English word.) Let me see what happens when I dictionary.com it...

1. The sacred book of Christianity, a collection of ancient writings including the books of both the Old Testament and the New Testament.
The Hebrew Scriptures, the sacred book of Judaism.
A particular copy of a Bible: the old family Bible.
A book or collection of writings constituting the sacred text of a religion.

2. A book considered authoritative in its field: the bible of French cooking.

Why don't we just rename it to graal book so we can avoid any future problems? That way everyone wins.

hmm

I once heard refrence to the Judeao-Christian Bible as an acronym,

Basic
Instruction
Before
Leaving
Earth

of course, this is some American cleverness and not actually what the word Bible means.

As a Christian, when I first saw the Windows Bible, for Microsoft's OS, I was offended becasue to me the Bible is one set of texts inspired by the One True God - that's what I choose to believe. Then I saw "bibles" of various segments of knowledge and realised that a new definition for the word "bible" - one that I think cheapens what I believe, and enforces a "whatever" society and moral relativism.

I echo the vote for Graal Encyclopedia or Graal Official Wiki, or even catchier and more marketable, the Graal Quick Refrence Guide.

what a ****ing crybaby. It's no big deal, it's called bible not for the holy meaning of it, but for the word itself. When people hear bible they think of the book with it all, everything they need on that subject is there, the bible for christians is just called The Bible if you say 'The Bible' usually you're talking about the christian book. but 'Graal Bible' tells me that its a book (or site, but whatever) that has everything needed for Graal. Don't make stupid threads like this, it's pointless,. and you're only doing it to start an argument, there's NO way that this actually offends you, because I know you have more common sense than that.

and lets face it, you made this thread for an argument, not because you actually beleive that 'Graal Bible' is offensive, because the word bible doesn't always mean the christian bible. Just like 'cross' doesn't mean that big wooden thing they put Jesus on. If you really are offended, wake up, you'll find the world to be a very offensive place

I don't want it renamed just because some people are being idiots about the word Bible. The Graal Bible is an appropriate name and its going to stay that way I'm sure.

use the word bible wherever you like, and christians turn the other check or whine a little.

draw one picture of mohammed, and an it's an international violent event.
I guess thats why you don't see books of knowledge on a subject bein called the Graal Koran etc.

I believe Stefan or unixmad decided to use a different name than GraalWiki because that was already being used. In fact, IIRC the GraalBible was called GraalWiki at one point.

I'm a Deist, if you dont know what that is go wiki it or something. It means I'm not Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, anything. So we share similiar religious beliefs. So listen to me now when I tell you to

Shut up about it.

There's nothing I hate more then when people try to shove their damn religion down my (and others) throat.

"Whhaaa, it has God on a coin. I dont believe in God, they're shoving their religion down my throat. I'm going to get it changed". That's just an example of what most 'athiest' do (I used the term 'athiest' because most athiest are ignorant fools who havn't pondered deeply about the universe. They found out they didn't like Christianity so they claim to Atheism). They think a word is shoving religion down their throat, so in return they try to shove their religion down other's throats. It's not that words like bible, God, Quran, etc are being shoved down your throat, it's just that you need to have a hissy fit so that you can be proud about yourself.

I'm glad I live in Georgia where we dont go into that whole "Politically Correct" fad.

According to the beginning of the Wikipedia article
, it means that you pretend to be using reason when claiming that there is some sort of god/divine power. I do not think that makes you any more credible than the usual sort of believers. Your dislike for books about religions does not qualify you any more than the christian dudes to tell us what to do!

That is awesome. Perhaps you should talk them into spending their time on more useful things, like trying to get rid of the Intelligent Design folks.

Quote:

I like to refer to myself as an 'atheist' instead, even though I do not tend to sit around and ponder universes. This is because I refuse to believe in an arbitrarily invented supernatural, which is pretty much what atheism is all about. I did not get told about any pondering requirements when joining the club, but what kind of pondering should be done before I am allowed to leave Christianity?

Also should I put up with mandatory classes that sell christianity as a worthwhile field of studies on the same level as physics, history or random foreign languages? Would that not be insulting to actual scientists?

Why should I put up with the government devoting the country I live in and the currency I use for my living to a deity I do not believe in?

That is something to be proud of, I am certain.

I don't see why it would hold special meaning to you; you're a self-proclaimed atheist after all. So what's the problem?
I do not see any Christians, Jews, Hindus, or Muslims creating any threads about how calling it the "Graal Bible" is blasphemous to their religions or their holy books.
This whole thing is just silly.

I dont think you entirely understand the Deist beliefs. First off we believe that there is a divine being/beings who created the laws of the universe. Need proof of that? Look around. Atheism might support the big bang and whatnot but then that rules out the concept of matter is neither created or destroyed.

However, we've come to realize that there is a reasonable explanation behind everything, aside from the laws of nature. If Jenny gets off drugs it wasn't because God helped her, it was because Jenny got off drugs.

We might believe in God, but we do not worship or praise him. We're out here because of humanity, that is how we gain success.

There are three types of religions similiar to Deism. Deism itself, Agnostic, and Atheism. All are one in the same save the fact that Deism believes ultimately in a God/gods, Agnostics are unsure, and Atheist completely believe there isn't a God/gods.
