Maybe if the karts were made only to ride down hills, then there could be something similiar to soap box derbys, and in England I believe those were held, but of course the adults were the riders ...
The bst solution is to replace kart graphics with horse graphics. That way they will still have that control system people seem to like, and it can still be used in the RP realm.
