That's quite strange, the font rendering shouldn't be much slower than in the old version. On which server do you have the problem, or do you have that problem on all servers?
In the Graal options you can limit the nickname length and change the default font size, may be reducing that is helping a little bit.
It could also be possible to add an option to use the old font rendering.
