Certain prayers can't be used by some gods, and the "holy word" prayer works differently for each god. For example, holy word cast by a follower a Brigid would damage only undead creatures, while holy word cast by a follower of Ogma would damage only fairies and dwarves.
Brigid and DianCecht are the only gods that disallow wounding prayers like cause light wounds.
An example of a god's effect on a prayer, other than with holy word, would be with Ogma. Sometimes, when hit by a cause wounds prayer cast by one of Ogma's followers, an enemy will be poisoned. This is just a small example. I'm not entirely sure of the sort of effects other gods have on this prayer, as I've not followed every one.
Also, certain gods are "attuned" to particular spell-types, like Brigid's attunement to Restoration and Summoning prayers. Being attuned to a particular type means that the prayer will be more powerful.
When a god "repels" a certain type, it lowers that types power (as far as I can tell, I have had little experience with this). It's basically the opposite of attunement. Oh, and obviously, denied means you can not cast that sort of prayer at all.
I hope that helps.
