Neo Geo makes the best arcade games. Never seen better graphics than a neogeo game in my entire life.

It's sad that I live in a place with only about 20 games total, and that's a total from every restaurant, shop, or arcade. (note: arcades are nonexistent where I am, the only one ever here was getting games from the last 80's in the late 90's, and therefore went out of business)

best graphics ever? I wouldn't say that. I've seen some of the best art ever in NeoGeo games but not the best graphics.

Neverwinter Nights has amazing 3d graphics but it's not released yet. I like NeoGeo games but they do not have the best graphics I have seen.

Actually, yeah, I'd say NeoGeo arcade games had the best art I've ever seen. But even console systems surpass its graphics nowadays.

It's sad that SNK has gone out of of business, and there aren't any more NeoGeo games. Even sadder is that they quit because of developers angry at their supervisors, who wanted them to make 3D games instead of 2D games with the wonderful graphics style they used in the past.

That makes me very sad...
I can't think of a single 3d game that's ever dazzled me with graphics like SNK games have, especially the newer ones like Last Blade 2 and Garou: Mark of the Wolves

If you don't make money, you go out of business. There's nothing tragic about that.

To my understanding, that's a myth; It's illegal wether you delete them or not.

You can possess roms if you own the original game (I think... or maybe that is a myth too?)

Basically, even though it isn't technically legal, once a console stops producing games, they aren't gonna waste time filing lawsuits against you if you are caught with them or anything. Like for example the nes and snes, atari, and even the neo-geo. They aren't making money off of those consoles or games anymore, so filing a lawsuit against you would just be a waste of their time and money. If they did it, they would likely win but they have other things to worry about I guess.

Now for example, GameBoy Advance, Nintendo is cracking down HARDCORE on emulator authors and people distributing roms for it. alt.binaries.gameboy.advance *was* a popular place to get GBA roms, but now nobody posts binaries there. Practically all of them have been arrested or taken some form of legal action against. Same thing goes for the authors of the emulators. There was an emulator called iGBA but it has been discontinued due to legal action or threats from nintendo (or a combination of something similar)

To me, roms are no different than .MP3 (and roms have even been around longer) I'm sure a good 90% of the people who used napster before the filters used it to download copywrited music. Downloading roms... no different. Is it right? Well that isn't an easy question, but in a word, no. For classic consoles or arcades, yes I think it's good. For newer systems like N64 and GameBoy Advance, no. Just like with those Zelda games I posted about the other day. I knew that the roms were brand new and that I would catch heat if I even talked about them (hehe Dante kinda griped me out which is okay he had a right to) but I did it cause I love emulation, what can I say? Just because I played them on my PC doesn't mean I won't buy them (as a matter of fact I am going to buy both of them once my Game Boy Advance arrives next month)

So I guess... what I'm trying to say is, if you wanna be into emulation keep it low key because just talking about it could get you in some serious trouble with the law (and even casual forum readers). And if you are gonna play roms for current generation systems, if it's a good game you should go buy it. If it's a bad game, well, don't support crap or that will just send a message to the developer "hey, people like our crappy game, let's make crappy sequels!"

Or you could just steal software like everyone else and every company will make crap no matter what.

Zulithe, you are correct, the law guarantees your right to copy any piece of intellectual property that you rightfully own, but not to distribute it or sell it.

In most cases owning classic ROMs is quite legal. I'm trying to figure out the specifics of such cases, but it may take some time.

However, copying Game Boy Advance and N64 roms (the most popularly emulated system) is completely illegal. Furthermore, it discourages the software industry, taking money out of it and decreasing quality across the board. So, in the long run, software piracy results in lower quality products, bankruptcy of small companies, and higher prices.

And furthermore it is a common misconception that people into emulation are pirates, in most cases this is quite the contrary. Most are just enthusiasts. They don't do it because they want to play free games, they do it because they have a genuine interest in games, most have very large (legal bought & payed for) collection of carts/disks.
