Misterious glow

okay i'm participating in this week's weekly challenge on pixel joint. And it's about a Misterious glow, so basically some lighting.

While I get a mysterious feeling from the scenery, I think the warm colors give more of a sunrise look. If you wanted an eerie/mysterious glow I would suggest using cooler colors like blues, or off greens.

Not that it's probably worth changing it now.

If I were participating I'd do a bug zapper with some kind of strange looking bug approaching it with its eyes popping out

you are brilliant, i gave it a go, and this is what came out. Also works better for the lighting on the trees and bushes.

still gotta work on the lighting on the ground, put a little blue in aswell and stuff, any tips, hints or suggestions?

Farest back is the same color as the horizon, they fuse, most likely but only at that point
then smoothly make a gradient

My 2D Mockup is a good example but the lightsource is not as strong as yours, the principe is the same.

The last one really shows that the light is powerful, because of the palette and he trees shadows, making it even more mysterious (yeah, a powerful light? Where the hell does it come from ?)

how to do a mix between those 2? I tried but then i got about the result of the 1st one which is as you said a reflection. D=

Work your way out of the light, and use the palette from both. (But not ALL of the colors, that would be far too many).

This is going to be the hardest part of the piece for you, and it's going to take a lot trial and error to get it right. Don't be afraid to work outside of your comfort zone, because only then are you going to get to where you want it to be.

Edit: For future reference, the circular/sloppy/wavy look in the first is what gives it the "reflective" style.

It's starting to look better, try to edge it off at a slant (Doesn't make sense... so I elaborate->). You seem to have a consistent hue all acrossed the edge of the cliff (or land). Remember that you're bright in the center of your late, and slowly fade as it gets further away. This applies in a full circle.

I hope that made sense, I'm really sorry if it didn't. It's 5:20 AM and I haven't slept yet.

Edit: I also think your style of dithering is making it seem fluid-like.

I hate to say this, dude, but the shadows and foliage look a little blobby. Shouldn't they branch out more? It kinda just looks like the stereotypical ball-on-a-stick tree.

true, but i didn't really put all my attention on them yet, thanks for mentioning tho, i was kinda forgetting about them.

your dithering should be in a more even/symetrical shape.
i looks really choppy when they are hugely uneven.

also you should try adding the tree after, to work with the background better.

good dithering pattern tho.

that is because i am very sloppy, i did not have the patience to carefully dither that background. So i did it less carefully and as a result it's more sloppy, but im working on becoming less sloppy.

Blue ones look like explosions rather than the setting sun in the red ones. Also, perhaps making the shadows skinnier and longer would look better

I think he's going in the right direction with the shadows. He just needs to experiment with palettes to define things a little differently.

And do some work with the lighting on the ground.
