MSVCR80.DLL Errors

A frequently reported problem with Graal 4 for Windows is a bug with a file called "MSVCR80.DLL". Graal 4 may complain that it does not exist, or that there are missing symbols.

We are aware of this problem. It isn't Graal-related, but can be caused by installation of programs such as Windows Defender or other Microsoft products that used a modified version of the DLL.

Reinstall or uninstall Windows Defender. It currently messes up the Windows files, and is still in beta.

If you don't want to do that, the most common fix is to place the file, downloaded from http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dl....shtml?msvcr80, into your Graal folder.
If this does not work, it is possible that replacing the version in your system folder (%WINDIR%\system32) will also work; however, this may cause certain applications to malfunction. Replacing the version in your system folder is entirely at your own risk.

Please only post a bug report thread about MSVCR80.DLL if the mentioned methods here do not work. Thank you.

kk

Any other methods?
is uninstalling windows defender.. would that work?

sigh...whats the point in bringing a new graal version out anyways.. Gk going to hell in anyways..
its the players that make the game not the npcs..

I like windows defender and i'm not risking it with the system files thing.

any other ways for this to work?

Why doesn't Graal just distribute a copy of the DLL in the Graal Folder as opposed to using the one in the system folder?

Hmm... Maybe Stefan can fix Graal so it doesn't break when another program is installed? Maybe?

Skyld I have updated your post, since downloading that dll from somewhere is not helping in 99% of the cases. It is clearly Windows Defender which is messing up the Windows files (dlls).

Questa: it is not Graal breaking, it is Windows Defender breaking the Windows files, and Graal for Windows is requiring Windows somehow...
Apothix: Graal doesn't require the file, Windows is requiring a fixed version of the file, not Graal.

It's not exactly Windows Defender breaking the windows files, more like Windows Defender is now using a "side by side" version to deal with dll hell problems (or so I read somewhere). Supposedly the new msvcr80.dll makes use of .manifest files while the old one didn't. Someone had a solution that didn't require the uninstallation of Microsoft Defender on a SoG forum:
http://www.darkandlight.net/forums/s...4&postcount=13
Maybe we can adapt this to Graal?
Currently I have no problems running Graal, except on RC2 when I try to open a file from filebrowser by double-clicking on it, it gives me that msvcr80.dll not installed error and shuts down RC2.

The dlls are bugged, no matter how you look at the thing. You would need to tell to Windows to use the new msvcr80.dll instead of the old one for each program you want to start, it is easier to just uninstall WindowsDefender and install a good spy-ware removal tool I guess. If we include that manifest to Graal then it will not work on machines that don't have the new dll version.
(still good to know more about why WindowsDefender is breaking it, I hope they can fix that problem sometime or just link their program statically)

It would be nice to have Graal to come with a manifest patch in the download menu of Graal v4 for those that have WindowsDefender installed.

Windows Defender is messing up system libraries so that they link to the wrong libraries and can't find them anymore.
If there would be an easy way to handle that problem without Microsoft fixing their program then it would be welcome, but like I said before we can't fix Windows.
On the messed up system you would need to know the good dll version (of Windows Defender), generate a manifest for the program you want to start. You can't make that automatic since the program you would write for that would have the same linking problem. And like you said before, even if you do all that work manually, you would still have problems executing other programs (e.g. for updating the Graal4.exe).

Somehow your windows dlls must be messed up, eventually reinstalling .Net might help.

Unhappy

ok I reinstalled .net first thing I tried... I think I am going to uninstall then reinstall them agian

EDIT: ok this is funny I just finished uninstalling them... then reset the computer... went on windows update installed the .net stuff from there...

now for some unknown reason windows defender is on my computer... is that part of one of the windows updates???

I don't ever remember installing that before since I do not have many things in my add/remove programs... I did a format about a month ago so I am not sure whats going on... hmm maybe this is whats causeing several other errors in a couple other games T_T just not the same dll XD

I wish I had known it was installed in the first place maybe it just was not showing up in the uninstall list... or I am just an idiot either one could be true XD

final edit: ok i found how it got installed since it tried to reinstall... I had a cd labled updates that I used and I went through it to make sure they were all installed since the format... and windows defender was one of them... I feel really stupid since I did not notice it before. the cd has updates to lots of programs and my virus software/spyware stuff... oh well sorry for bothering you XD

What I did was google the file, download it, and put it in the windows folder. Then I disabled windows defender, took the other dll that was messing up graal, and put it back and turned on windows defender and it workd :P

eh when last I tried upgrading the processor/motherboard on the computer alot of stuff just quit working... Random Games / Programs like microsoft outlook/mozilla firefox just quit working... so I went online finding all the updates I could to get as much working as possible... I had to get videocard drivers from the group that makes omega drivers for nvidia because the normal nvidia drivers crashed 90% of any game I would run including graal... so I guess I should not have upgraded my pc afterall XD

I have made a .manifest file for graal, it works perfectly for me, if any one wants to try it pm me your email and i'll send you the files and instructions.
EDIT: I have also made one for Rc2 that fixes the error when you directly open a file from the file browser.

If Windows Defender is not located on my add/remove programs list, does that mean it is already gone/uninstalled?

OK, sorry to bump an old topic but I thought everyone should know that downloading and copying this file is not the appropriate solution to the problem....I have been searching around the internet and have found several posts from Martyn Lovell, some C++ Architect at Mickey$oft, this is not the appropriate solution, as it will do nothing but cause catistrophic consequences in the future. Stefan, I suggest you contact this chap and see if the two of you can work out some sort of a solution to this issue, it will most likely require the redesign of the Graal system libraries and whatnot...

Hello everyone,

My name's Martyn Lovell, and I'm the development lead of the team that produces msvcr80.dll [The Visual C++ Libraries team]. There are a couple of things I'd like to clarify.

First, Norton WinDoctor is wrong. It incorrectly reports that msvcr80 is missing when in fact it is correctly installed in the WinSxS directly in the windows. folder. If you own WinDoctor, you should report this bug to Symantec so that they get it fixed.

Do NOT copy the this file to any of the folders WinDoctor recommends.

If you've already attempted to take corrective action for this issue (by copying msvcr80.dll or msvcr80d.dll to ...\system32 or to the .NET Framework directory), please undo this. These files do not need to be copied around, and doing so may cause problems in future.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you have more questions, as I don't read this forum regularly.

So as you can see, copying this file is not the appropriate solution...

Creating a blank file in system32 with the name msvcr80.dll is also NOT the correct solution to this problem or a safe thing to do. If you've created a blank file, I strongly recommend deleting it.

The correct thing to do about this problem is NOTHING. Norton have been contacted, and will eventually fix their tool, but in the mean time, taking "corrective" action here is only risking causing problems later.

if you search around the net you can find several threads like this one with "solutions" to this problem that stop Norton reporting this error. None of them are a good idea. You should un-do them if you have done them.

Visual C++ Libraries
Apparently this issue has been around since December of 2005, but this is the MSDN forum posting where I found the advice:

We will try to investigate the problem more next week, we will try to setup an XP installation where the problem with Windows Defender can be reproduced.

Eventually it could also help to contact that Microsoft guy, they don't seem to have a clue about that problem though. You can use any tool for checking what dlls Graal is linked to, and see that it only links to dlls that exist on any machine. The problem is that some dlls providing base functionality of the system (file dialog?) have been replaced by new dlls which require Visual C runtime libraries which cannot be found in the default dll search path.
Eventually those default dlls aren't actually replaced, but a wrong side-by-side version of it has been made the default version if a program doesn't contain any manifest.

Hello,

This is NOT limited to Windows Defender. I have never used it on my PC and do not intend to. However, I do use Microsoft Office (I can not uninstall it, it is required for the work that I do), I can no longer install Graal after installing Microsoft Office 2007 (final, not beta)

I put the msvcr80.dll into my windows sytem32 folder (there was not one there) now I get this error:

If i remove the msvcr80.dll from my system directory it then complains that it can't find the dll

So I can't even install Graal.

This is a very important issue, if people can't install your software you are going to have difficulty getting subscribers.

How can you have the final Office 2007 on your game computer, right now only the enterprise edition is released? It seems your Office version messed up the windows dlls, similar to the Windows Defender problem some months ago, not sure how you can fix your system easily. The problem seems to be quite common with Office 2007 Beta 2. When exactly do you get the error, it seems the window displayed correctly?

Um, then why does the game have error message when you don't have the DLL?
Maybe ours is just wrong version or something? Then why not provide correct one.

I also had the same problem on vista and after installation of office 2007 on my xp system. Creating a manifest file for both the Graal4.exe and the Remotecontrol2.exe that links to a older version of the dll seems to have fixed it for me.

Ugh, someone please give instruction on how to make a manifest file.

EDIT

Well after some searching I've found out how to fix the problem with a manifest file. A text file called manifest.txt is attached to this post. Place the file in your Graal folder and rename it to Graal4.exe.manifest to fix the Graal4 error. Copy it and rename to RemoteControl2.exe.manifest to fix that also.

I copied and pasted the info thats in the files from a URL I found in a different Graal post.

1. Delete Windows Defender.
2. Open up Window's Search program.
3. Search for MSVCR80.dll
4. Delete those files

Those steps worked to get Graal up and running again, and I had to experiment considering the Graal help e-mail address is.. unactive?

Anyway, I haven't had any problems yet, but if you want an antispyware program, go to <http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html> and find a good mirror for the file (which is called SpyBot, and it works pretty good). I also use Ad-Aware, so that is a good program too. Also, Zone Alarm seems to be a good firewall.

P.S. Don't blame me if the anti-virus/spyware programs don't work (for you), they are just suggestions.

Why not just static link these DLLS and then noone will have these problems. I still can not even install graal cause teh isntaller gives errors (read previous posts) and yes I tried the manifest file "solution" and it gives a completely different error about a missing atl80.dll file. I found it online, put it in the folder, still didn't work. Can you please provide a better solution?

I spoke with another person having this same issue in a chatroom, they claim it is a bug in the installer software that Graal uses, can you please look into this possibility. If it is simply a matter of switching Installers there are tons of alternatives, like Nullsoft Intsall System

I've found the solution to the ATL80.dll problem, here is updated manifest for it.
Place attached manifest.txt in Graal folder and rename to Graal4.exe.manifest. And for RC do the same.

The problem with those manifests is that they are only working if you have exactly the same bugged dlls on your computer. Graal is not using those dlls (they are not existing on the computer where Graal is compiled) that's why it cannot be linked against them anyway.

The manifests didn't work for me, and as I said I uninstalled Windows Defender, and that's the best way to get Graal to work again.

Has anyone reported or tried to report this problem to Microsoft?

Is Graal on Windows being built using Visual C++?

Graal may not be using them directly but perhaps certain components like the standard windows buttons/check boxes/etc use them?
I say this because the errors were only generated (for me atleast) when i tried to open the player pm history. Additionaly after using the manifest files all the default buttons used in graal (playerlist, options dialog, etc) appear to be more uhm stylish now
