My shading style

I remember there was one time that Tony Montana gave me a few tips on shading and I believe this has helped me improve ten fold. I've just felt a random need to pass on my method of shading to the community.

I'm not much good at writing tutorials or anything like that but I'm going to try.

I'm going to create a brick wall tile. First we start with an outline. I usually do 2 bricks in a 16 x 16 tile, you can go smaller or larger if you wish.

Now choose a gray (infact, it can be any colour. I use a desaturated purple for spooky/dungeon like walls). This is what I have chosen:

Now choose a lighter colour and add in some highlight, like so:

Choose a darker shade than your base shade. This will be both the outline shade and the shadow. Fill your outlines with the darker shade, like so:

Now, for the shadow, we will use dithering, which will give the illusion that an extra shade is being used. We can also use dithering on the highlights, which I will also do.

Looking fairly decent already, eh? When Tony shown me a few things, he told me about dithering on the outlines aswell. Why would we want to make them lighter? Watch.

This makes makes the outlines softer. You could possibly mix and match this.

This is what it should look like, minus dithered outlines:

Here is the finished result:

I have attached the two types, tiled.

Thanks for reading and post your results =D

This should really help out people just starting and graphics. This is a really nice tutorial. If I may give a suggestion to what you should do next time, you might want to explain to people what dithering is and explain some of the other terms you used. They might not know what they are yet.

I'll probably make a seperate thread explaining different techniques and stuff. There's a dithering tutorial knocking around somewhere but I didn't really think much of it.

What you need to do in my opinion is shade the bricks more like bricks, and add more contrast. It looks more like some weird blobs, or, well, a bit round. Thats my edit. Kind of rushed it, I'm not sure if everything is edited like it should be ;o
