Server Buying

Why does it cost a tremendous ammount to open a server? It should cost next to nothing if anything, if the server is done well, it's only going to bring more players to Graal, which means more money for Stefan and whoever else receives the profits.

I was just curious as to why!

When a server becomes Classic the Owner/Payer doesn't have to pay for the server anymore. Server's aren't free. For example bigger and more powerful servers can easy cost 50$-100$ a month.. which is 600$-1200$ a year and on graal you get a decent server with a own engine and script engine for 100$ for a year

You've just gotta make sure you have a good team behind you if you're willing to purchase a server. The main aim is the classic tab too many people buy servers and waste their money with only a few ideas.

When you think about it, you're paying for the seemingly unlimited storage space and bandwidth for a server as well as the whole game hosting aspect. It's not that bad a deal.

Still, I'd like to see some Cyberjoueurs sponsored playerworld initiatives

I guess so, I was just curious because I was thinking about buying one but I wasnt entirely sure. I have plenty of ideas im just not sure if I would want to engage in that kind of a commitment.

Also, thanks for the other comments, I guess its not so bad of a deal.

It costs lots of money, and its not a guarantee that all people that are making servers are going to pass.. 99.9% of the playerworlds fail, so why give up lots of space that costs them money if only a few out of millions would fail.

Can you develope? If yes, specifically scripting then it would be a good investment for you. Otherwise, meh.

If I had the money, I would do it just to learn scripting, and mess around with it for fun.

Yeah but for 100 USD most of the people figure it's either prosper or suffer. They all get paranoid over the fact there server won't last forever so they rush work to get done because they spent the first 10 months chatting with random staff on RC, or at least half of the time there is life on RC there is work, and there is just chatting and hanging out.

But 100 USD isn't really something you should do to meet new people...there's servers on classic and such for that. Developing can be learned for free without paying the money, although a hands-on experience might be more preferable.

Either way, you should really just at least know what you want done when you buy the server, so 6 months in on your project you're out of ideas. That's probably what kills all these servers with grand staff but with administrators that can't keep them working.

It's the same payment amount with or without graal.net, but I figure graal.net probably doesn't work with playerworlds now or something...A question for stefan. ;o
