Advice for servers (default files)

I saw Malinko's post about N-pulse and their replacing of sprites.png (i did it)

Anyhow, any server can easily protect "default" graphics by uploading them onto their server and using a gupd to download the files on every login. If every server would handle it like that than there would be no whining about default files being overwrighten or files with identical names.

Don't give me any bs replies which make no sence, the technology is there so utilize it (Nor would I care for any negative replies for I am a huge narcissist and I give little for others )

Search for "update packages" on GraalBible. Basicly, its a file wich handles what files that will be downloaded either everytime the player logon the server, or everytime theres a new version of the package.

And Angelus, people are replace DEFAULT Graal files on their servers, THAT can only be fixed by redownloading Graal.. and thats just a pain in the ass.

You can just redownload the main GFX package from the login server instead of reinstalling.

They are default images; you should not have to.

I guess you could write-protect the default files by removing all write permissions.

I agree, but I just wanted to clarify that you did not need to reinstall Graal because of it.

Yes.. agreed with Skyld.

We should not force the players to download default images everytime they log on because someone wants to use a file with the same name.

I, honestly, think we should only allow playerworlds to upload files with a certain prefix. Ie: on Mana Realms I use mana_ or nw_ on N-Pulse you would use np_ or something. Then have the custom graphics download to a folder in the levels/* folder. That way theres no way people can overwrite existing graphics and no one will be confused as to where graphics come from.

Is it that hard to just rename the file to np_sprites.png instead of sprites.png?

Yeesh
