The PNG and MNG image formats were developed to replace GIF. There is every reason why they -should- replace GIF:
- No copyrights
Higher color quality
Alpha channel support
(for MNG) better animation support
Smaller file size
However, Microsoft and other leading software companies have been remarkable reluctant to support PNG or MNG. Currently I don't believe -any- MS product supports MNG, including the "Image Previewer" and Internet Explorer. IE does support PNG, but only handles full transparency for one color (rather than full alpha channel support), and (I believe) no transparency at all for graphics with color depth of higher than 8-bit (256 color). Thus the PNG format is stuck with many of the same limitations of the GIF format.
Netscape's PNG support is even worse, or at least it is with the last version of Navigator that I own. Of course, I never update Navigator because it's an inferior browser anyway.
Write Microsoft and tell them to add support for PNG's alpha channel capabilities and MNGs!!!

Whew..... felt good.
