Post Problem with Failed Attempts on Learning Spells

I'm guessing this hasn't been posted here. I checked and didn't see it. The thing is, there have been quite a few complaints about failure to learn spells. In quoting Baroshi Rakurai:

"You fail to learn the spell" One sentence No one wants to see! One day, you finally save up enough money to buy that spell book you've been eyeing. You purchase it and are excited to learn the spell. You read it, but then *dun dun duuuun!* YOU FAIL TO LEARN THE SPELL! those words just shatters the persons's emotions.

In my, and many other's, opinion, this is amazingly unrealistic. You buy a book, read it, can't understand it, and then it disappears. This is illogical and ridiculous .. most spellbooks are awfully expensive, and it takes very much time to obtain large amounts of money on 2k2. It is this player's opinion that if you fail to learn a spell, prayer, ability, whatever it may be, that the scroll/book does not disappear, that it remains until you manage to learn the ability. There would be a lot of people much happier about it, I'll tell you that's certain. Well, just a suggestion! :o

How's that? Example: Alex picks up a scroll of fletching. He's very happy that he finally afforded it, and is now going to learn it. He attempts to learn it, but fails. His friend Bobby also wants to learn the ability, so Alex lends the scroll to him (which obviously, under these circumstances, still exists), and then Bobby succeeds in learning it .. leaving Alex with nothing. How is that sharing? I don't understand your logic on this one.

One thing: I like this idea, but if you fail the first time, you should have to level up at least once before trying it again. Books should not be 100% reliable, and a low-intelligence character shouldn't be able to sit there clicking and clicking until finally he learns a spell WAY too advanced for his character.

--Or maybe use a formula, like [spell level - character level = number of tries] the character gets with that book. After you use up all your tries you have to level up for another chance.

Or make it where you use up 2,000 food points for each time you attempt to learn it.... Because what happens if your like lvl 10 and you fail to learn a skill? You'll have to like get 10,000 exp just to read it again X_x

I like this idea, because I have bought many failed books. :[

Anyways, it should be based on time, after a certain amount of time elapses, you are allowed to attempt another reading.

Thumbs up

I think you all have great ideas. I think a real plan should be based off of all these things. I hope it works out.

Why not? We don't all learn the first time so we keep reading untill we understand. So in this case, click-click would be you trying and trying to learn the text as in real life. And I totally agree with that person who suggested about books not turning into dust. Its not realistic and maby the scrolls should but not the books.

I think maybe I posted my idea wrong..... the formula should be [character level - spell level = number of tries]. So if you're a level 10, working on a level 5 spell, you get 5 tries before you have to start worrying about exp again. For spell level > character level, you could get 1 try minimum at each char level.

Now that I've corrected it.......

How is this not fair? If a lev-10 char can't learn a lev-5 spell in 5 tries, the character is obviously not too bright (or not too lucky) so he should have to earn a new level to try it again. If you try to learn a spell that's higher-level than you are, you get one shot (to find out if you're really intelligent/really lucky) and then you have to level up to try again.

Personally, I think 2k2 should have separated physical level and spell level anyway. Like a sorceror could be a lev-10 magic and only a lev-2 melee (if he's used spells more than weapons), and a warrior could be just the opposite. My formula might work better if it had been done this way.

Err good idea except one problem all these scrolls have been magically enchanted by the gods to disapear as soon as you read them. if you don't grasp it the first time it's too bad.

The point of this thread is to suggest that we change this fact, right? Except we're talking about books, not scrolls.

You should know what you are talking about before you post.

Everything you start with will disappear when you drop, with exception to Cauldron and Sack I believe. Stuff bought in stores haven't been "magically enchanted by the gods".

Yeah, only starting items are enchanted, heh.

Why can't you just make spellbooks cheaper?
