Town Levels?

Today I was reworking a few levels I created awhile ago, and decided to stick a town in. The problem is, after I added a few houses and a path, I wasn't sure on what else to add. I don't want to add anything impractacle. What do you guys/gals do when you're creating a town/village?

I add grass fences and yards to the houses. One of the best ways to make a level look nice that most people neglect is that there shouldn't be a lot of open space. People try to make up for this by using far far too much "detail" in a level.

I could imagine a few tree groupings scattered across the area would be nice. Fill in a mushroom or three around the trees, sort of clinging to its shade. Detail the rest with some grass clumps, heavier away from the pathways but leaving a few to make it look good close to them too.

For less natural detail, I'd suggest some fences and hedges, signposts giving directions and a few "gardens" of bushes or something.
