Can't Start Graal (Ubuntu Edgy)

I've been having problems starting Graal on my Laptop. Hopefully I can give enough information for this report to be useful.

Running 'graal' I get this message
HTML Code:

Direct Rendering is enabled, Graal should run smoothly.

data directory: /usr/share/graal/
user data directory: /home/falados/.graal/graal4/
The license file is invalid.
Running 'graalexe' I get this error:

I can only assume that its failing when setting the screen mode. disable that in the graal config, or perhaps you have older 3d that only works in 16 bit mode or SOMETHING.

try turning direct rendering off and see if graal starts.

Turn direct rendering off and Graal probably will fail to start, or it will run very very slowly in software rendering mode.

Unfortunately, Graal doesn't write a skeleton config file or anything, so I don't know where or which options I can edit. I doubt it has anything to do with DRI being enabled. Plus I have Edgy on another machine (With an ATI Radeon 7500) and it runs fine with DRI (in 24bit).

There should be a graal4config.txt somewhere (there is on Mac, probably in the Graal folder or ~/.graal/graal4); not sure if there's an option in there to control display modes.

Also do you know which driver you are using, and could you post your Xorg.conf? It is probably in /etc/X11/.

Nope, no files there. If you have some config file I can have maybe I'll try tweaking the options.

Thank you. I have a lot of options to tweak ,but it seems that the ones I suspected don't do anything. I changed the window mode resolutions, however, they still didn't fix the segmentation fault.

Hmmm "glxgears" is working fine?

Update: You might need to install the package xserver-xorg-video-intel . Both i810 and intel driver support DRI, but the (open source) one from intel is more up-to-date. Not sure if it really helps though, but it seems your driver is quite old (more than 2 years old).

Tried the intel one. the change made my mouse cursor invisible, and graal still won't run (Same errors)

It actually was already on false, I switched it to true just so I could see what the change would be, however it again didn't affect the situation.

One thing I did notice is that the 'Illegal Instruction' message has changed to 'Segmentation Fault' but not because I changed any options... It's very weird..

I've also reinstalled Ubuntu Edgy before just to see if it would affect the error, but it won't run on a fresh install either.

Eventually it is also a problem with the bit depth of your desktop, changing to 24 bit or 16 bit might help.
It seems to crash in SDL_SetVideoMode. I have already made some code for replacing the SDL calls, with that code it would be easier to detect where the error lies (if its still happening). It doesn't support full screen yet, but it could be made optionable.

Changing my bit depth from 24 to 16 didn't make it work, however I have a new error now.

Don't know what can be the error. Eventually it is a problem with SDL, but since I am not sure I don't want to blame them. It could be possible in the next version to have a special video mode (like I have described) which directly accesses XWindows and OpenGL and print more debug info. Until then I cannot help you.

Alright, well then in the next version, I'll print out the debug-info I get so that this bug can be solved. Thanks anyway.
