You need to learn vector graphics instead of drawing everything by hand.

perhaps.. i hate illustrator though.. it just doesn't give me the same level of control

That's funny, because now that I'm savvy in Illustrator I feel that way about Photoshop.

I imagine you're right, but I have real trouble drawing using the pen tool.. I wish there was a way to use my tablet in illustrator, that would let me 'paint'

You can use your tablet with the pencil tool in Illustrator, although it tends to add too many nodes.
