cuttree/playeranistep

Can someone please explain to me how this gani works.
I notice that when online each time you cut the tree with the axe it steps up one frame in the animation.
But when I am offline, it seems that playeranistep is global and no matter what animation you currently have running on your player the tree will begin cutting down.
How does G2k2 let the tree know that the playeranistep it wants is the axe?
And how does it make the animation step up each time you hit it? (In the gani script it has "if (playeranistep in {1,2,3,4})". But the thing with any gani is that when played it goes through all of those steps in one motion. But for some reason, online, the tree stops at each step.)

Thank you in advanced for any help.
