Do you have to be a certain level to get some bonus from the Karate place on the starting island? Is there anything you can really do there?

Not that I know of...
Although, there is a scroll of karate that teaches you karate. Not very useful skill, but it's funny to see someone with a diamond sword run away from someone without any weapons equipped.
