Yes but youd need a LOT of metaballs to make it look convincing, and they take longer to render than standard particles because they interact. So where youd have 1000 particles taking a while to render due to them all having reflect/refract, the metaball particles would take lnoger because you'd have a thousand which have to calculate collisons and such too which is a tall order
