Quick kindaish DEV Question.

Anyone know of a .mp3 to .midi converter? That is...free or extremely cheap? I'm just wondering because my friend made a lot of really good songs on Garage Band that I'd like to convert to .midi and use.

That place has a free trial, I've never used it, all I did was just google and found it.

You can do it in iTunes by right clicking on the mp3 song -> convert selection to whatever you have listed.

To change the "convert selection to ___" option, go to your general options for itunes then...importing options I believe...

I'd give better instructions but I'm not on my computer right now. I believe midi is one of the options. If It isn't, you can download a patch that adds it to the conversion list.

Hm, it only has 'convert ID3 tags' and 'convert selection to AAC'

I can't find the importing options menu.

But... MP3 is (compressed) audio and MIDI isn't (It's notation - it's not actually sound). The mere concept of converting them is just wrong... Pitch and transient detection are not advanced enough to do it properly, and a frequency domain/granular method would not yield the kind of result which would be useful in a music production environment.

So, what you are saying is that it is virtually impossible. Gotcha.

Okay, new question! A good free program to make .midis

I'm saying its pretty difficult to create a midi given a simple and clear riff/melody, and beat detection's not nice. Trying to do both at once and then a bit more is not really feasible with today's knowledge.
