Okay.
I've vowed not to restart again, so don't tell me to restart as someone with magic. This subject says no magic. Without magic. I don't want to use magic.
I am a thief. I have woodsman. Okay, I can use woodsman and stealing to help me, sure. However, stealing seldom works (The most I had before dying was about 700 experience in agility from it), and after level three woodsman gives little experience.
I have a damage+2 ring, and I use a short skull sword. I don't want another weapon, so don't try to change that either..
Look .. my point is .. how do you expect melee fighters to level without dying so often? Someone with quite some patience can get to level three with the outside monsters .. but past that point it's simply annoying .. as they begin to give nearly no experience.
So, you move on to the dungeon and fight gloks. Here's a problem, these monsters poison you. Yeah, so you're fighting the gloks, doing well, slashing through them, then one manages a hit one way or another. You're poisoned. Your speed jumps down to ".500". You stand aside, and wait for your health to go back up, then fight despite the poison, since it takes so long to wear off .. this usually will keep you alive, so long as you return to regenerate when your health gets low.
However, luck is not always with you .. and you'll die eventually. Sure. Someone could fight heavils or dievils, they don't affect your stats in anyway .. but have you tried attacking them with weapons before .. at mid-level? It's not so easy.
Okay, and there's another option. Get a bow, and use arrows. Well that's grand, you can kill from afar. However, there are three problems with this.
First is that chances are .. you don't have fletching, so you'll have to either make do with a crummy bow or waste a load of money on a better bow.
Second problem is with arrows. There is no simple way to obtain arrows. You've got to chop down a ton of trees, then sit in the joinery for quite a long time (time where if you had magic you'd just be zapping away at monsters) making the arrows. Woo, now you're done, on average my guess is one would make around 150-300 arrows. Okay, that's good. You use the arrows .. but they will run out soon .. it takes a lot to kill those monsters.
Okay, I guess that actually makes three there .. so it's four problems. The fourth being you can hit yourself with your bow .. so .. the monster gets close, you fire at it .. it hits you, and you hit yourself as well. On average, one would do around 18-20 damage with a bow, and the horned monsters do a max of 17 damage, if I remember correctly. So that's a minimum of 35 damage in one hit. No, that's not easy to survive.
So, what to do? I have a few suggestions.
First off .. I like this .. have it so that with each successful blow struck, one gets a bit of experience. Not much, but enough to make a difference. Of course, the experience should depend on how often hits are made and how much damage is inflicted. Tied in with this .. is my second idea. A player manages to destroy this monster, using only melee (or missile .. although I don't know if this idea should apply to missile weapons as well). Since they used no magic or any other means to weaken or kill the monster, they get a bit more experience than they normally would have. If the player were to use magic or some other attack that this would not apply to weaken the monster, and then kill it with a physical attack .. the player would not get the extra experience. I like this idea .. and I think it would do well in balancing the classes.
My second suggestion is about arrows. Maybe instead of 5 .. make 10 arrows from one board? I don't see why not. Or, maybe make arrows purchasable, perhaps .. an archery shop? I'm not sure what to do about arrows, I didn't think too much about it.
I suppose those are my only ideas for now. I just wanted to get this out, because I've died four times today from bad luck.
By the way, if you leave some ignorant comment like "dude you're not trying hard enough" or "you just suck" or some such thing, expect to be ignored. That's not what I'm looking for here, and that's not what I created this thread for.
That's all I've to say.
[edit] I forgot about spears. Yeah, I don't need to say much there. You throw the spears, you miss most hits, you run to get the spears, you're totally vulnerable .. and chances are your spears are right where the monster is (for obvious reasons). Oh, and sure, you can use it as a weapon, but it takes a moment to even jab the thing. So, not much has to be said there. Okay, that's all. [/edit]
