I Shouldn't be Lagging.

I've been told by several people that my laptop is "beast". I'm just wondering why I'm lagging on era. My lag is very strange, it's like everything is normal speed, but my character seems to walk slower than everyone else. So it's just like everyone is faster than me. The weirdest part is on era, when you press ".", (the period button on keyboard) it shows the lag of everyone in the level / area from highest to lowest and mine is always towards the bottom. My lag is always 40-80, and yet I lag? Then suddenly it spikes up to 200-222 lag and i'm suddenly fast! It's strange. Hi Darren,

Have you checked the weight of the items in your inventory on Era?
If you're carrying too many heavy items your character will walk slower.
You can see your current movement speed on the left panel of the inventory.
The default walk speed is 1.08.

I have a simular problem, everything is normal speed including myself but for some reason people see me "warping". My ping also seems to fluctuate from 100 MS to something crazy like 1149 MS.


I went on speedtest.net and here are my results. Any help would be great

Sounds more like a problem with the Graal client itself. See if you have problems running it from an XP computer on your network.

Also it's not just on Era. It's on every server..

All of Graal's servers are in Texas. Maybe your neighbors have a more direct connection than you. Try a traceroute.

Your laptop is between low-mid tier definitely not beast.

The best way to reduce ping is to use a wired connection, since wireless has the possibility of interference.

Also restart your router, and modem. If that doesn't resolve anything it might be a problem that's outside of your control such as a technical ISP issue.

Other possibilities include trying UDP.

Yes, I'm slow at the default speed, and when I use a cappuccino to get 1.13 speed, I'm still slow.

My internet is superb, I use Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox/3.6.3. It's fast when i surf the web, but even when I close out things Graal speeds up a little but it's still laggy.

Ya, that's still inconclusive. Is your CONNECTION laggy on Graal, or does Graal not run at FULL SPEED(smoothly, 20fps). See, one means Graal is having problems establishing a stable connection, while the other means Graal is having a hard time running on your hardware for whatever reason. They are two completely different problems that need to be approached differently.

The first(actual connection latency) would be evident by slow loading times on Graal and high pings(takes a long time to download a large file from Graal, like a tileset, or taking a while for your connection to communicate with the Graal servers). Most servers have a way to check your ping with them(on Unholy Nation it's 'showlag'), and as for the former... well I'm not sure. I can usually tell what kind of speed I'm getting on a server by watching large files download in the F2, 'files' tab. Alternately, you can go to http://statistics.graal.us/ and look up your desired server, grab the IP and go to start > run > "cmd" and then type "ping <insert server IP here>" and it will tell you your ping for that server if they don't have a command for it.

As for the latter, actual game slowdown... well this is most apparent by just looking at Graal and seeing if things visually look sluggish. If worst comes to worst, log on to Unholy Nation and press alt+f, which will bring up my FPS display(f:xx). 20fps is the desired framerate for Graal, and if it's running lower than that during normal gameplay, than something else is going on and it's not your internet connection.

I have similar lag problems with Graal but unsure to what the overall problem could be. Initially If I ping the ip of the server hosting Graal Kingdoms from the terminal I get around 100 - 150 ms and also around that value in my profile statistics when I'm online, however I frequently get ping reading of 1000 - 5000 in my Graal Kingdoms profile but still have 150 - 150 ms if I ping though the terminal. Also when I get reading of 1000 or over I'm visually doing nothing but my character is still reacting to my commands such as equipping weapons ect as other players can see me doing it plus when my connection goes back to 100 ms I get a steam of mud messages and weapons switch. I do know for a fact that it has something to do with my ISP or how they externally handle my connection as I never had any of these problems with my old ISP.

It's kinda making it impossible for me to play Graal Kingdoms as I'm having these problems 90% of the time and it is very rare that I have no problems with Graal at all.

I did the cmd thing for Era and it said average 52 MS. I went on UN and the thing is f:20 but it drops sometimes. It doesn't go lower than 16 though.

Also...I did not know Graal's servers were in Texas. Where in Texas? Would explain why I've never really lagged on Graal.

I had this problem on UN for a while :o Apparently projectiles were piling up and eventually taking up lots of CPU or something. Either that or some script was functioning horribly. I think Tig resolved it.

However, changing levels fixed it so it might not be the same problem.

Seriously though, 2-4GB RAM will suffice on all desktops and if going wired, restarting router and modem doesn't fix your connection problems. Most likely you won't be able to fix your lag problem and will just have to put up with it like everyone else with a flaky ISP.

This is kinda why I hate advertisements for computers. The statements in these adverts are always has a 250 Gigabyte Hard Drive and 4 Gigabtyes of RAM and never say anything about the processor. I also find it funny that these systems have a 32 bit operating system and wouldn't be able to use all of the RAM installed in the system.

RAM isn't the problem here as Graal doesn't use a lot of RAM at all. When I'm playing Graal I'm using 300 Megabytes / 3.20 Gigabytes of my RAM and only 26 Megabytes of the 300 is for Graal. it is more likely that other hardware components are causing the problem.

Having more RAM will only make your computer faster if you're using a program (or running a lot of programs) that uses a lot of RAM and you run out (therefore having to use virtual memory, which is slower than RAM).

Found a fix, turn off ALL your antivirus programs, and then run CCleaner.

I barely lag at all now!

Running more than one Anti-virus is just asking for trouble, and performance degradation especially if it has some sort of nosey firewall module (assuming you're using the Suite version, it does).

I personally only use MS Security Essentials, and only have loading problems with Graal since it decides to scan it for whatever reason.

I'd recommend uninstalling/removing BitDefender completely and just use MS Security Essentials alone as it is pretty solid.
