The Golem

Legend tells of an alchemist who long ago discovered a way to bring life to cold stone. This is his story, as it has been told for generations.

Having researched his peculiar craft for many years, the alchemist - his name now forgotten - discovered a way to form solid stone into a living, flexible material. He learned also to infuse the same stone with the spark of intelligence. By thus enhancing a statue of a man (stolen from his neighbor’s yard) the alchemist created a Stone Golem - a living, breathing, walking man of stone.

The proud creator could not contain his joy at the phenomenal success. He rushed outside, the Golem plodding along heavily behind. He shouted at the townsfolk to come see his new creation. The curious folk gathered around and stared at the stone man, pointing and asking questions. The ecstatic alchemist explained how he had created the Golem, in his enthusiasm completely missing the tone of the villagers’ muttering and grumbling.

Finally, one person - whose name has been passed down through the ages as Dran Teful - grew upset enough to raise his voice. He accused the alchemist of using evil magicks, of creating an abomination by bringing life to natural stone. The angry murmuring of the crowd grew to a roar. Teful took the initiative again, reaching to the ground for a pebble and slinging it at the alchemist.

Before long the entire crowd was throwing rocks at the alchemist, who staggered under the hail of debris. As he tried to stumble toward the door of his home, he turned to his Golem, who was standing ignored in the street. “Don’t just stand there, you stupid creature!” the alchemist shouted. “Do something!”

The Golem tilted its head to one side for a long moment, considering the situation. Finally it appeared to reach a decision. The living statue bent to the ground, reaching for a nearby stone.
