What ever happened to New World?

Just a thought. Do any of you remember this? It looked really good from what I remember from the preview. I still have the application in my inbox.

They did not get anywhere fast enough and then lost momentum in favour of G2k1 and GK. From what I remember, they had a lot of high quality pieces of content but nothing consistent enough to constitute gameplay.

I remember playing on some of the leaked content.

I think Loriel pretty much covered it though. It lost momentum, and died.

You're playing it!

Nearly all the advancements NW made have eventually been implemented into Graal(NPC-server, ganis, tileset layout 1, and a few other things), save the graphics.

Also the .nw level format, I suspect.

But while a lot of the funny details that were accumulated made it into Graal (though I think there are still a bunch missing, say, the background tile), the main point was to have a coordinated team run the development, with a lot more coordination, planning ahead and thoughtful design decisions than what had been going on with Graal back then (pretty much Classic, at the time, where almost all updates were player-submitted content, most of which were player houses and the rest could not script). Since then a lot has changed, and servers started having actual development teams and everything, yet then's NW team still had an amazingly high concentration of skill and attention to detail.

You are definitely not playing NW now, and I would guess that most of the technical innovations, all of which were implemented solely by Stefan anyway, would have appeared in one form or another even without NW.

Does anyone still have the original document that pitched NW? I doubt their secret forums are still around, but I think the pitch was posted on the NW recruitment page, so someone still ought to have it...
