Light Effects

I've been trying to get a good grasp on the math behind doing good light effects and i've taken triginometry and pre calculous, i'm just not very good at pulling equations out of thin air... Any guides you guys have for doing that or maybe a skeleton forumla?
I'd like to know how to make an object orbit, arc from point a to point b, and oscilate. |
