The only example i can think of to back this one up right now is quite a lame one, but it's sound. Think of Lord of the Rings, right...these midgets gather together a load of people and go on some world-saving quest. When they set out, they don't just pull out a ring called "Mordor Warpring" and jet off to the volcano thingy, do they? No, they set out on ponies and trek for a year or two or three (probably exaggeration) over big expanses of open land, mountains, forests, blah blah blah, encountering villains and monsters every now and then.

And then when in book two two of the midgets get kidnapped by the badguys, the dwarf and the elf and the king don't just pull out their 6 RoTs and Minimap, looking for where the orc's heads are and zoom over there in 30 seconds, they follow trails and stuff taking them days and days to catch up.
Woah there buddy. You're comparing a book to an online game. That's not going to work. For one, you're reading a story, and it's not like reading their "questing" is going to take you 3 years. The author shortens it A LOT. One minute they are starting the quest, and 2 pages later, they are halfway there.

Nobody wants to spend 3 game years just to get to one area of the map. GK land is barren aside from non-interactive trees, and the occasional low level monster. If there were tons of things going on along the way, I don't think it would be as bad. But all you're doing is pressing your arrow keys for a long time until you arrive at your destination.

The reasons for minimaps and warp rings and all that crap, is so you're not spending you're entire REAL lifetime, just trying to complete one task in the game. I can see it now:

- We've started our quest for the graal today! It's in the land of Galador. We should arrive there in 2 years or so.
- 2 years pass
- Here we are in Galador! But wait! We just got word that the graal was taken to Runamuck a year and a half ago! Now we must quest to Runamuck, which should take about 4 years...
- 4 years pass
- etc etc etc

By the time you're 82 years old, you might finally get the graal, in which it will do nothing, and you will fall over at your computer screen and die.
