Win 3.1 and windows xp were not made to be backwords compatible. They are completely different incarnations actually.

I meant that as some sort of grasp for those who wouldn't understand.
Obviously something has been done differently. If I implied no backward capabilities, then I'm sorry. I was merely trying to show something along the lines of as things get newer, they will become less and less workable with the finer points of older things. Sure they'll be able to handle the basics of an outdated file, but not necessarily the finest details, as the file was originally designed to use.
