Large maps are nice, but the shear size of some can be overwhelming in the development aspect. However, there's a lot to fill and things can be kind of sporadic and seemingly random. Well, if you're talking about a RP server, then yeah, they would need as much space as possible to fit everything they need into the map and possibly more space for future developments. It's just that some people like big, open spaces and some people like everything close and easily accessable. I'm sure you can do the same with big servers if you plan it out correctly.
