There's this Roman myth of a brilliant military general named Cincinattus (yes, Cincinnati was named after him). After his unrivaled military campaign, he retires to work the plow, and live on the farm in relative obscurity until one day, a senator rides up to him and hands him a scroll, saying that in exchange for him returning to Rome and fixing all their numerous problems, he could have the power of a Dictator.
He accepts, not for the power but for the chance to help Rome, and leaves his plow in the field, riding off on the Senator's horse. He rushes to the senate, balances the budget, raises the public's faith in Rome, and ends all their wars in three weeks.
He then hands the scroll back to the senate, gets back on the horse, goes back to his farm, and starts filing the rust off the plow. |
