This game doesn't have concentration checks. If you're hit, you drop the spell instead of having at worst a 50% chance of failure at 0 damage. This is WHY mages are screwed - they have no chance.

I'm not saying the system is balanced or correctly implemented, I'm just saying that it's defensible in terms of realism.
